Background
The "Warning Bump" is a simple traffic safety device that is intended to warn drivers that they are in close proximity to a work zone and more specifically that they may be veering into a traffic safety setup.
Traffic safety devices such as cones, barrels and signs can become lethal projectiles to workers, pedestrians and other drivers when sideswiped and launched by a passing vehicle.
The "Warning Bump" works in conjunction with all standard traffic control devices including but not limited to cones, barrels, jersey barriers and signs. The "Warning Bump" is simply placed over the traffic control device on the traffic side of the setup. Should the motorist begin to veer into the traffic control setup, the "Warning Bump" provides an audible and physical signal to the driver through their vehicle that they are getting too close to the traffic control setup. The "Warning Bump" works much like the grooves milled into the shoulders of highways that audibly and physically alerts motorists when they are veering out of the travel lane.
The "Warning Bump" was invented by people who work inside the work zone, after having observed drivers habits when entering and driving thru work zones it became apparent to them that the drivers tended to veer towards the work zone as they were trying to see what activities were taking place within the safety set up. It also became apparent that as the driver drew closer to the set up the delineator was no longer visible to the operator of the vehicle, thus leaving them unaware of how close to the actual work zone safety device they actually were. At this point they were already creating a hazardous situation to the workmen and themselves.
The"Warning Bump" is an economical means of adding an additional safety feature without having to replace existing delineators. It adds virtually no time to work zone setups, requires no maintenance, adds a significant measure of stability to the delineator, and does not require workers to leave the work zone while being put in place.
The audible warning is also an alert to workers that a vehicle is in close proximity to their work zone and may in fact be veering into their work zone. This audible alert may provide workers with enough early warning to get out of harms way.
The actual bump is made of solid rubber stock that affords the motorist an audible and physical warning when the vehicles tire passes over it.
The "Warning Bump" is equipped with a reflective strip on both the base and the bump for added night-time warning capability.
